Welcome to Hitchin & Harpenden Liberal Democrats!
Nigel Quinton, Parliamentary Candidate for Hitchin and Harpenden
|
Welcome to the Hitchin & Harpenden Liberal Democrats website. Through this site we hope to keep you up-to-date with what we are doing in your area and hope that you will use it to let us know what you think too.
Visit my Blog.
This constituency is a diverse one, each town and village having its own distinct character and identity, which is what makes it such a great place to live. It is split between St Albans City & District Council in the south and North Herts District Council in the north. Information about our councillors and about each area can be found using the links on the left of this page.
Our current MP is Peter Lilley, famous for his Tory conference ditty "I've got them on my list", and for voting against the Climate Change Bill, and the Conservative Party have been the dominant party here for many years. We have made steady progress and are challenging them at every turn. We came second in the 2005 General Election and since then have retaken control of St Albans, and are the official opposition in North Herts. In June of this year the Lib Dems became the official oppsition in Hertfordshire, and in this constiruency Labour's vote dropped to just 11%, in fourth place behind the green party.
Best wishes,
PS - There is lots of news also on our councillor websites - check out Cllr Sal Jarvis' site for news affecting Chesfileld Ward and the Hitchin area - www.saljarvis.mycouncillor.org.uk
In these days when Labour and Conservatives are almost indivisible on policy, it is the Liberal Democrats who offer the only real alternative - FREER, FAIRER AND GREENER.

Tory Brown Bin Mess!
Thu 21st Jan 2010
Several years ago the Tory-run North Herts District Council (NHDC) made the decision that residents' brown bins would not be emptied over Christmas. This decision was taken so that the emptying of black bins wasn't disrupted over the festive period - and at the time was probably sensible. However, the council have since changed the rules on what waste can be put into our brown bins. Nowadays the contents of brown bins not only includes traditional garden waste, but also food waste. It's fantastic that residents are doing their part for the environment and recycling more, but the council have yet again failed to react quickly enough to the change in residents' habits and the subsequent problem of rotting food in uncollected bins.

"I hate to say it, but only one party leader seems to have grasped that, if you construct a system where unskilled people are worse off by taking a job than by staying on welfare, they remain trapped in poverty - and that is Nick Clegg. "
Lord Norman Tebbit
Daily Telegraph online - 13 Jan
"It's unbelievable that the Tories are still planning to cut taxes for a handful of millionaires when the majority of people across the country are feeling the squeeze. We need fair tax cuts that put money back in the pockets of ordinary people. The Tory sums simply do not stack up. It is irresponsible and highly misleading for George Osborne to continue to pretend that they do. "
